Original Creation

White poppies by Lowell Speers

Voy Kay 27 May 2021

This one ws created one day before Mother's day, which was also my wife's birthday, so I decided to give her a surprise with this painting. Her favourite flowers are daisies and orchids but I thought some poppies might do the trick as well.
The tutorial for this was by Lowell Speers, a Bill Alexander instructor.

Canvas used was a HQ Winsor & Newton 16"x20".
Easiest part was the size of the flowers and the background. Toughest part were the white petals' shape and colour, the sterns (gallons of pint thinner) and the leaves (never had the brush swing in me). So overall .... not really pleased with it myself but the missus .... LOVED it!

I might alter/better/pimp this painting in the near future (Sunnylady already give good advice on that) but for the time being, I'm okay to upload it already.

Please enjoy!

Really pretty voy, I can see why your wife loves it. I've watched this video a few times, I will have a go if I can get my BR paints softer. Not sure how soft they need to be though. You did a great job not only of the flowers but the background is also very nice. I like it a lot.

Oooo Voy you started painting flowers! They're lovely! I love the color of the leafs and the flowers look so soft. Great job! No wonder your wife was pleased! 🤗

Dear Tom, thanks for liking this!
No, this has been just a small sidestep in my oil paintings portfolio. Somehow I realize that flowers are not really my thing. I might try one or even two more, but that will probably be it.

Dear Tlp, the background was not really that easy since it needed some real value differentiation. It also needed to bring the flowers out and harmony with the leaves. I was happily surprised I got a good result in the end!

Dear Umagaan, your comments always paint a smile on my face!!

Voy I tried to copy your background and got nowhere near it. I got a nice rich colour at the bottom half making the flowers pop, but I went too light toward the top, so much less definition there. I too plan to do 2 more, I have 3 rooms where I think they will look right.

I will be awaiting your next flowers TLP! Thanks for your support!
